The churchyards and chapels are viewed with respect, have a spiritual quality and a connection to life and death. Many of these images were photographed in San Francisco, the Greek Islands and Hawaii. Seat was photographed while at school in St Helens, wandering in the cemetery in my lunchtimes. The still photographed on a retro TV of cemetery gates in the cult film Harold and Maude was taken during the same period. It was filmed in 1971 in California, including Sutro Park and Sutro Baths in San Francisco. See 'Guide to San Francisco' download . Harold
and Maude meet while attending a funeral as they both like to frequent
funerals, Harold drives around in a hearse.
I enjoy
photographing tombs and altars in peaceful places. A moss covered stone cross is strikingly set onto a stone ball over a tomb, deep in the trees of a French garden in Riocaud. I was enchanted by this tomb in the woods with Ivy trailing over it, it looked like a
stone sculpture or a magical lost tomb. A green doorway on the right of the
photograph was accidentally created by the trees. There are no inscriptions and the owners intend to investigate the history of why it is in their
garden. I wonder about the significance of the ball and it seems strange being guarded by chains when there is no one to
guard against but maybe the chains are symbolic of guarding against bad
spirits ? French Huguenots were
denied burial in Catholic cemeteries and not wanting to be in
with the heathen, buried their dead in the family garden.
