Photographic Print. Hawaii altar shrine in Maui with red flowers and white statue of the Virgin Mary and child.
Madonna and child Jesus is an icon of the Catholic Church. Roman
Catholic missionaries arrived in Hawaii in 1827 and today are the
largest religious group. A shrine to the Virgin Mary is a shrine marking an apparition or other miracle ascribed to the Blessed Virgin Mary, or a site where historically, a strong devotion is centred.
Visiting an altar or shrine is a way to respect, honour and look after
ancestors in their
afterlives as well as seek their guidance for themselves or other
people. The statues often seem to have a rock enclosure or cave like structure
behind them. I am intrigued by these altars as special sacred places adorned with beautiful objects and flowers, they have the energy and emotion from a lot of people concentrated in one place. I like the pathway leading to this altar and the way it is decorated profusely with red Ginger flowers.
Colours are as accurate as possible but may differ slightly due to screen calibrations.
