Colours are accurate to my photographs but are often over saturated on current HD, uncalibrated and phone screens. Portmeirion is a village and 70 acre area of lush woodlands on an estuary which is set into the hills and mountains of Snowdonia, Wales. It was designed and built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis who wanted to show that 'a very beautiful natural site could be developed without spoiling it'. Williams-Ellis was one of the pioneers of the ecological and conservationist movements. He fought for beauty, 'that strange necessity'. From 1925 - 1976 he created a mix of buildings, architectural features, fountains, curiosities and statues which he collected from around the world. It is ironic that when Clough was first looking for a site to build his vision, he
was looking for an island but when he saw Portmeirion he knew it was the
right place then 41 years later, The Prisoner was filmed there, depicting
Portmeirion as an island from which there was no escape. When it rains or the weather is changeable, I wait for the sun to shine
to photograph the village, architecture and gardens because I think it
is like a beautiful stage set waiting for the spotlights it deserves to
be switched on, so that it glitters. Like a magician, Clough is a master of delightful illusions through
exaggerated perspectives, space altering tricks, odd angles, arches
aligned with a building or statue, buildings cascading down cliffsides,
winding paths and steps inviting you to explore and stop at many
viewpoints so that every step taken is a different view, creating many
perspectives. This has a magnifying effect and this effect is further
enhanced by film in The Prisoner. I saw a letter in the Number 6 shop
from Sir Clough Williams-Ellis who after seeing the first rushes, wrote
to thank Patrick McGoohan for enhancing the village in this way. Get
gloriously lost in curious juxtaposition and wander in 70 acres of
woodland.
At Portmeirion, while filming a one off episode of the spy series,
Dangerman in 1960, Patrick McGoohan got the spark of an idea for The Prisoner.
He came back in 1966 and persuaded Clough to allow him to film there and
persuaded Lew Grade, head of ATV to let him make it. He wrote it,
directed some episodes, produced it and played the character of the
eneigmatic passionate Number 6. Filming took place in Sep 1966 and March 1967 and its original run was Sep 1967 - Feb
1968. In an interview by Wesley Britton, Roger Langley wrote, 'people
talk about McGoohan striving for perfection and he has been quoted in
respect of his role in Danger Man as saying he wanted to make each
episode 'as perfect as possible'. Some of the 'political' issues are
with us today: surveillance, loss of
freedom, storing of personal data, computer records and vast databases,
invasion of privacy etc. However, The Prisoner was so much
more...What began as an apparent
kidnapping of a spy to a strange place called 'The Village', ended up
with surreal stories, an allegory of life itself...What
is still with us is the rebellious spirit of the main character,
refusing to be 'numbered' and demanding his right to privacy and
freedom....and McGoohan was on record as being concerned about the amount of power
and control some people had and the abuse of it. He was also concerned
with the proliferation of nuclear weapons and this is reflected in the
final episode of The Prisoner. ...as one of the production crew stated neatly, The Prisoner
is 'about life itself'...without his being in overall
charge of the production, there would have been a much tighter reign on
what he wanted to create. As it was, his artistic flair and input into
the series meant that it was unique and students of TV can watch the
series today and marvel how an ordinary prime-time show could become so
complex and still be discussed four decades later.' Scott Thill in Wired wrote, "The Prisoner was an allegory of the individual, aiming to find peace and freedom in a dystopia masquerading as a utopia." An influence on Twin Peaks and Lost ?
In Paintings in Gouache there is a painting which has a scene from The Prisoner, Portmeirion 1. Filmstrip, Pillars and Chess . Other paintings in the series in this section are Portmeirion 2. Life and Death, Chess, No. 6, Flowers and Baubles, Portmeirion 3, Phoenix, Shell and Gloriette Windows, Portmeirion 4. Mermaid Take Care Not To....
