Photographic Print. Transamerica Pyramid and cloud at 600 Montgomery Street, Financial District, San Francisco.
Walk around North Beach, dinner on Columbus Street, dessert and coffee at Caffé Greco or perhaps the colourful bar, Vesuvio, which has cosy seating up on a balcony. Walk 5 mins to the end of Columbus to the Transamerica Pyramid on Montgomery Street. Standing across the road, looking up, the powerful shape of the pyramid is mesmerising against the night sky. The Transamerica Company are no longer in the building but still use the tower as their logo. In 1989, the magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck the Santa Cruz Mountains and sixty miles away, in the heart of the financial district, the occupants of the Pyramid were unnerved as the building shook for more than a minute. Geological Survey instruments showed that the top floor
swayed more than 1 foot from side to side. The building was not damaged; the survival of
the Transamerica Pyramid can be attributed to the architecture and the building's careful
structural engineering, designed to withstand tremors in the seismically
active Bay Area.
