Photographic print. Chapel Altar and Two Lights in Laigueglia Cemetery on the Riviera di Ponente, Italy.
The simplicity of this white chapel with crumbling walls and the strange hazy blue light flooding through the oculo window make it a tranquil peaceful space. Oculus is a Latin term meaning an eye and oculi is the plural. The
purpose of many such circular or oval openings was mostly architectural and sometimes to allow subtle light to illuminate the
interior spaces. The circular gaps were often
completely open, with pierced panels or glazed with crude glass
available at the time.
Colours are as accurate as possible but may differ slightly due to screen calibrations.
