Photographic Print. Hibiscus rosa sinensis flower with velvet red petals in Tenerife.
Hibiscus has been the national flower of Malaysia since 1960 but the word is derived from the ancient Greek hibiskos. It is hermaphroditic; it contains stamen and pistils and is a genus of
flowering plants in the mallow family, Malvaceae. The Latin name rosa-sinensis literally means rose of China but it is also known colloquially as Chinese hibiscus and Hawaiian hibiscus, is a species of tropical hibiscus in the Hibisceae tribe of the family Malvaceae and is native to East Asia. Hibiscus contains about 250 species of great diversity; annuals, perennials, herbs, shrubs and trees that are native to warm-temperate,
subtropical and tropical regions throughout the world.
