Photographic Print. Unicorn house seen through the Piazza Arch in Portmeirion village.
The pink Palladian house with 4 white Doric pilasters and plaster unicorn was built in 1964 in an elevated position, creating an imposing sight through the arch. The architect of Portmeirion, Sir Clough Williams-Ellis wanted to show that 'a very
beautiful natural site could be developed without spoiling it' and he was one of the pioneers of the ecological and
conservationist movements. He fought for beauty, 'that strange
necessity'.
In Paintings in Gouache there are 4 paintings about Portmeirion and The Prisoner.
Colours are as accurate as possible but may differ slightly due to
screen calibrations.
